Spin the Bottle

Building a hit through simple, social fun

In Meta Horizon Worlds, breakout success can come from the most unexpected of places. Just ask Austin (who you may know as meta.jesus). Since March 2024, his massively popular world Spin the Bottle has drawn more than one million visits. Using simple game loops, lighthearted competition and unpredictable social situations, Austin has spun-out a passionate player community seemingly overnight.
For creators looking to foster highly engaged and retentive audiences, Austin’s journey from former house painter to full-time creator shows how simple, sticky social interactions can drive sustained growth in Worlds.

Igniting community through direct engagement

Before Spin the Bottle, Austin was already an active creator in Worlds. In his first world, Pirates Life, Austin would spend hours showing newcomers the ropes and explaining how everything worked. Although it wasn’t exactly easy, that time invested in Pirates Life proved that an engaged community, built through direct interaction, was the foundation for long-term success. This lesson quickly made it into Austin’s world-building playbook, and was key to Spin the Bottle's later success.

With Pirates Life, I originally built something that I was passionate about and that I actually wanted to play myself. I was in the world every evening for about four hours just interacting with everybody, adding them to my friends list and being social. And pretty soon, an organic community formed out of that.

Identifying an opportunity for social connection

When thinking about his next world, Austin first pictured a simple "liar's table" game that focused on fun social interactions. But he also noticed the popular social hangout worlds in Horizon often felt unnatural. "A lot of hangouts at the time were just awkward," he says. “I approached Spin the Bottle with this idea of having a hyper-casual game that gives people a reason to talk to one another."
Acting on that insight, Austin used Horizon's creation tools to build a Spin the Bottle prototype in just two days. He included a portal right inside of Pirates Life to gauge interest, and when he returned several days later, Austin found his new world buzzing with activity.

Building for fast iteration and accessibility

Austin’s instinct paid off, but to keep the early momentum going, he knew he had to act fast. That's where Horizon's quick development tools helped free up time to focus on Spin the Bottle's social elements—the key ingredient that kept players hooked.

My whole process is kind of like, let me make the simplest possible version of this idea. Like, I can make this in five minutes and test it. Get in five friends and just test the mechanics if it's fun at all... And Horizon is really good for that, because it's so fast to just throw something together and test it out.

Using simple, intuitive mechanics meant anyone could jump in and immediately get the hang of the game. This simplicity also meant the world translated beautifully to mobile, despite being initially conceived for VR. He even added in platform-specific rewards and fun visual feedback for mobile players who tended to play with their sound off. This approach to accessibility ultimately helped Austin connect with the widest possible audience in Horizon

Sustaining engagement and growth

Launching Spin the Bottle was just the beginning. Initially, the world’s engagement was driven by its simple and fun premise, as Austin hadn’t yet implemented specific progression or retention mechanics. Once he saw the world’s potential, however, he began adding features like daily login bonuses and other reward systems. Alongside these later additions, Austin prioritized monthly themed updates for holidays like Christmas and Valentine's Day, which completely changed the world's look and offered matching items as in-world purchases.
"It creates urgency and excitement that drives repeat visits and purchases," Austin says. He also kept a direct line open with players on Discord, where they could report bugs to earn rewards and even influence upcoming features. To keep growing, Austin used 'door traffic,' a common strategy where creators place portals in their worlds to encourage and facilitate travel between them.

"It's so underrated," he explains. "You can funnel massive player numbers... But you have to be smart about it. You can't put Butterfly Kitchen Simulator and Spin the Bottle together. That's a different demographic." To make this strategy work effectively, Austin set up door swaps with creators making similar experiences, thereby helping everyone get discovered. "It's like having your store in a mall with complementary businesses," he says. "Everyone wins."

The role of the Meta Horizon Creator Program

Austin credits the Meta Horizon Creator Program (MHCP) for providing significant support along his journey. "The creator program changes everything," he says. "They provide financial support through engagement-based bonuses, development resources and connections to other creators." This support provided income stability while he grew his worlds.

Beyond the financial support, Austin gained access to MHCP resources and a thriving creator community. He found this network invaluable for exchanging knowledge and getting support when facing challenges, making the program critical to his overall success.

Measuring viral success and retention

Spin the Bottle's blend of simple fun and authentic community resonated with players from the start. The strong results that followed also showed Austin’s approach was right on track, delivering impressive numbers.

Data current as of February 2025.
Within just two weeks of its March 2024 launch, high traffic and engagement earned Spin the Bottle “Featured” status. The world’s appeal was undeniable, eventually attracting over 1 million visits. As of February 2025, Spin the Bottle has reached an estimated 1 in 10 Worlds players and achieved notably high levels of player engagement compared to other top worlds.
These results highlight the power of Austin’s community-first approach and provide a clear roadmap for success: focus on connection, build intuitive experiences, engage deeply and leverage platform support where possible.
